The kinder, gentler face of Zionism

While tens of thousands of Palestinians have been either killed or rendered homeless by last summer’s mercilous attack by Israel, opposition Labor leader Isaac Herzog on Saturday called on the government of Israel to respond to the refugee crisis by granting asylum to a limited number of Syrians looking to escape the violence in Syria.

Herzog stated further, “Jews cannot be indifferent while hundreds of thousands of refugees are looking for a safe haven.”

Herzog is correct, Jews cannot be silent while there is so much suffering, but Zionists can, as they’ve demonstrated for the past 67 years in Palestine. They not only have been silent, but have been a major perpetrator of human suffering.

“For years, I have been warning about the terrible massacre that is taking place in Syria, and the grave situation faced by the refugees. But the world is silent,” Herzog wrote. ” . . . Our nation knows the lessons of history well. We cannot remain indifferent to this great suffering.”

Is this a joke? For years he was warning about the terrible massacre taking place in Syria? Yet, he failed to look at the massacre taking place in Gaza, which was sponsored by his own government of which he is a participating member.

How easy it is to look outward. It allows you the good fortune of not having to look at yourself while you maintain a sense of your own righteousness. Let’s take in Syrian refugees but deny the Palestinians the right of return to their homeland. Let’s take in the suffering Syrians while we destroy the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians right here in our own backyard. Is there a contradiction here?

Herzog then states that, “Our nation knows the lessons of history well. We cannot remain indifferent to this great suffering.”

What specific lessons was he referring to that justifies Israel’s subjugation and occupation of Palestine? What lessons taught Israelis that it was acceptable to arrest and imprison people arbitrarily and hold them indefinitely without bringing charges? Maybe it was the lessons taught by the U.S. in Guantanamo that influenced their thinking.

What lessons justify breaking into the homes of Palestinians in the middle of the night, without warrants and without cause, and scaring the shit out of them?

Israel is a racist, fascist country and cannot cover that up by a cheap public relations strategy using people who are suffering as pawns. If Israel wants to deal with suffering people, let them look in their own backyard in Gaza and the West Bank where they are the sponsors of terrorism.

This reminds me of the fight against South Africa’s apartheid. People who had never responded to the racism right here in the U.S. were only too anxious to make their voices heard regarding South Africa.

Let’s be honest, Israel couldn’t care less about the Syrian refugees. They are not about to contaminate their country with Syrians. That does not fit into the Zionist program. This is nothing more than a message to the rest of the world that Israel is really made up of humanitarian people who care about the suffering of others.
