Who will shed tears for the thousands of children killed at the hands of the U.S.?

It was interesting watching President Obama giving his address on gun control on Tuesday. He seemed legitimately moved to tears, especially when referring to the 20 children gunned down and killed in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. The killing of these babies brings all of us to tears that their lives were taken from them before they had an opportunity to live them.

But, there is a greater context for us, as citizens of the United States. The U.S. and especially the Obama administration have orchestrated policies that have caused or supported the deaths of thousands of children worldwide. Who is shedding tears for them? Are the lives of these children, who do not live in the U.S., any less precious?

Journalist Ajamu Baraka writes, “l’ll start believing those tears when Obama withdraws all support from the ‘Israeli’ PM and ‘Saudi’ King for what they do to Palestinian and Yemeni children day in and day out, and ends the drone wars his predecessor began 15 years ago, all fascist policies that terrorize innocent child victims worldwide.

“These folks are really insane. You know, we joke about it, but it is really true. How can anyone take a sitting president of the U.S. that is responsible for the mayhem and death across the planet seriously when he cries because of gun violence? A man who gave the Israelis a green light to murder Palestinians because the occupiers have a right to defense? A man who give[s] moral support to the slaughter of people in Yemen by the dictatorial state of Saudi Arabia. A man who counts the destruction of Libya and the deaths of over 50,000 human beings as a successful foreign policy initiative. And who unleashed a murderous policy of regime change in Syria that resulted in millions displaced and the lives of hundreds of thousands (lost). No, I am not impressed with this U.S. centric sentimentality. Lives in the U.S. are not more precious than the lives of ‘others.’”

During the summer of 2014, when Israel was attacking Gaza, this president supported the U.S. sending a supplementary supply of weapons and arms to Israel. Why? Their offensive was so brutal that they were running short of these supplies. During that summer, over 2,200 hundred Palestinians were killed, most of them civilians and 500 of them children.

Saudi Arabia is bombing civilian sites in Yemen, killing unarmed civilians, including children, and causing a humanitarian disaster.

Saudi Arabia is the largest purchaser of U.S. weapons in the world and the U.S. continues selling weapons to them, despite their humanitarian abuses in Saudi Arabia as well as outside and their disregard for human life.

Who will shed tears for those children?

Alfredo Gama writes that Obama is able to shed tears for children living in the U.S., “While children in Palestine are being displaced by an apartheid government he funds and Central American kids deported back to their countries where they’ll be killed.”

President Obama’s administration has launched a series of raids against undocumented families who came to the US seeking refuge from violence in their home countries.

President Obama has the worst deportation record in history, with over 2.4 million people deported during the seven years of his presidency.

Continuing with these massive raids across the country in the last year of his presidency will cement President Obama’s legacy as the Deporter-In-Chief. There will be no going back, and no way to undo the pain and separation of countless families.

Who will shed tears for those children?

We see what we want to see and Obama’s tears will be lauded by the “liberal” media as a sign of his dedication to end gun violence. How, then, will they explain that while he wishes to end gun violence within the U.S., he is instrumental in increasing violence internationally? The chances are, that question will never be asked.
