We are experiencing a zombie apocalypse

Public health workers, election officials, and political office holders — from city commissioners to governors — are all reporting death threats and other threatened acts of violence by a group of people who seem to have become zombified as mindless sycophants of Donald Trump. For those who have been in range of the dead-eye stares of mouth-agape Trump supporters pounding on windows and doors, it is literally out of a scene of a George Romero zombie flick. Yes folks, we have a zombie apocalypse on our hands!

But zombie apocalypses are merely the product of Hollywood horror movie producers. Not quite. The website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has cleverly introduced the concept of a zombie apocalypse to convince people to take appropriate health and sanitation methods as if there was one. From the CDC site: “Wonder why zombies, zombie apocalypse, and zombie preparedness continue to live or walk dead on a CDC web site? As it turns out what first began as a tongue-in-cheek campaign to engage new audiences with preparedness messages has proven to be a very effective platform. We continue to reach and engage a wide variety of audiences on all hazards preparedness via ‘zombie preparedness.’”

It is a rare person, indeed, who has not experienced family members and close friends being transformed into “zombified” Trump supporters. In my case, friends of over 30 years have succumbed to zombification. I have convinced myself and others that there is no use trying to salvage these friendships. Just as a bite on the neck from a zombie or sleeping too close to an alien pod (as in “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”) meant that a person was turned into either a zombie or alien residing in a human body, the transformation into a Trump creature is usually a one-way operation. Few infected with Trump zombification ever return to their original selves. In other words, the person you once knew is gone and permanently so. It is best not to fret over salvaging such creatures but to remember them as the humans they once were.

Another reason for avoiding Trump zombies is that they will not hesitate to use violence against family and friends. When they become convinced that they cannot recruit others to their cause, Trump zombies will lash out in anger and, in some cases, violence. These creatures are to be avoided at all costs.

Who can forget the photograph of Trump zombies pounding on the doors of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus in April of this year? [right] They were trying to break into the building in order to disrupt a news conference by Governor Mike DeWine on Covid-19 response. Mr. Romero could not have come up with a better zombie scene.

In a scene similar to the one in Columbus, Trump zombies outside of the TCF Center, a vote tabulation facility in Detroit, attempted to break in to stop the vote counting. [left] There was a similar scene outside of the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, also a vote counting facility. Two armed Trump zombies from Virginia were arrested and charged with plotting to shoot poll workers at the convention center in Philly.

Several Republican officials have been urging Trump zombies to commit acts of violence in order to maintain Trump illegally and unconstitutionally in office. Chair of the Arizona Republican Party Kelli Ward tweeted: “I am willing to give my life for this fight,” adding, “This is what we do, who we are: Live for nothing, or die for something.” Members of the Michigan Wolverine Watchmen militia have been charged with a plot to kidnap and execute Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer and conduct a massacre at the Michigan legislature in Lansing. Michigan Democratic state representative Cynthia A. Johnson has received racist death threats from Trump zombies on her voice mail. One message stated, “I hope you like burning crosses in your front yard because I’m sure by the time this is all said and done there will be several, and maybe even a noose or two hanging from the tree in your yard, you dumb fucking commie bitch.”

Jennifer O’Mara, a Democratic state representative in Pennsylvania, has reported that she, members of her staff, and Republican state representatives have received threats. Darrin Camilleri, a Michigan Democratic state representative, said he received messages like “Be prepared to take your last meal” and “We’re looking forward to bring back firing squads.” Camilleri’s parents also received similar threats.

While the sane people of the United States would not care whether Trump zombies and leaders like Ward Trump neo-Nazi gang leaders off themselves in some sort of Jonestown-like sacrifice ceremony for their Trump god, such calls to violence by Trump zombies and Trump, himself, are bound to result in the death or injury of innocent people.

Trump zombies also have the habit of gathering at the homes of public officials and menace them and their young children. Michigan’s Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reported that armed Trump supporters gathered outside her home “shouting obscenities and chanting into bullhorns in the dark of night” while she and her children were decorating for Christmas. Zombies, being the mindless creatures they are, do not take breaks for Christmas or any other holidays.

A video conference, in which the mayor of Boise, Idaho, Lauren McLean, and other Idaho public health board members were discussing invoking a four-county mask mandate, had to be cut short after Ada County Commissioner Diana Lachiondo tearfully announced that she had to rush home because of what was, essentially, another Trump zombie attack. Lachiondo said, “My 12-year-old son is home alone right now and there are protestors banging outside the door.” Another board member, physician Dr. Ted Epperly, said protesters were “not under control at my house.” The protests were organized by People’s Rights, a group founded by extreme right-wing zombie leader Ammon Bundy, as well as Health Freedom Idaho, an anti-vaccination organization.

In announcing the suspension of the Idaho video conference, Central District Health Director Russ Duke said, “I got a call from the mayor, and it sounds like the police, and she is requesting that we stop the meeting at this time because of the intense level of protesters in the parking lot and concern for police safety and staff safety as well as the protesters that are at some of our board members’ homes right now.” In addition to the homes of Lachiondo and Epperly, Trump zombies showed up at the front doors of other board members’ homes. Mayor McLean later said, “No child should be frightened by a mob of protesters, no local official should fear violence for their public service.”

After criticizing Trump’s attempt to overturn Georgia’s presidential election results, Georgia Democratic state senator Elena Parent received messages like, “We are watching you, you have kids, we are coming to your house.” Chris Estes, a Republican county assessor in Cole County, Missouri, wrote on Facebook that Parent’s actions were treasonous and that they are “punishable by death.” Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who certified Joe Biden as the winner of Georgia’s electoral votes, said he and his wife have received death threats. Raffensperger said his wife was the first to receive the threats. “Then I started getting them. Then she started getting sexualized texts. Threatening stuff,” Raffensperger told The Guardian. Raffensperger also said election workers all over Georgia have reported incidents of being stalked. A Trump zombie named Chris Hill, who leads Georgia Security Force 3% militia, has been videotaped menacing the home of Raffensperger and the governor’s mansion of Republican Governor Brian Kemp.

Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling, who called out Trump and his supporters for making violent threats, has  received police protection. Eric Coomer, security director for Dominion Voting Systems, was forced to go into hiding following death threats. Coomer also reported that his father received similar threats. Christopher Krebs, former director of the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, has also reported receiving threats. He is suing Republican lawyer Joe diGenova, a far-right TV talking head, and Newsmax for suggesting on the network that Krebs is a “class-A moron” who, “should be drawn and quartered. Taken out at dawn and shot.”

The chair of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, Ann Jacobs, has seen photographs of her home posted on Twitter along with threats against her children. Zombies, of course, make no distinction between adults and children when they are out for blood.

President-elect Biden should not even consider reaching out to such Trump zombies. They are too far gone for that and they must be dealt with by an iron fist. In his inaugural address, Biden should issue a warning to all those Trump zombies who are intent on attacking individuals with weapons, including purposefully spreading Covid-19. Biden should borrow a paraphrased line from Liam Neeson in the movie, “Taken.” To all those Trump zombie terrorists who continue to threaten elected officials; public health officials, doctors, and nurses; and the children and parents of such individuals, Biden’s message should be clear: “We will look for you. We will find you. And we will kill you.” What was U.S. policy for Al Qaeda, the Islamic State, and Al Shabaab, should be good enough for Trump zombie terrorists, U.S. citizen or not. As far as human rights are concerned, after people cease being human, they no longer have any “human rights.”
